Reality about Reality Web Design

Posted in Random Thoughts on March 14th, 2011 by Romelo Itong

I first posted this story way back in 2003 but it got lost somewhere. I was able to salvage it using the Wayback Machine.

A couple of months ago an individual named Shamshad contacted me regarding some web design work. He introduced himself to me and said that he is with Reality Web Design. His proposal was if I could submit a design study for one of their project they will give me more projects to work on. Seeing that this could be a new opportunity to earn some additional income, I gladly agreed and submitted a design study. After a while he contacted me again. Now, he is saying that the client liked another designer’s design but this designer was charging too much for it. So, he asked me if I could create a design which is the same but not exactly as the one the other designer made. And so I did. In fact, I created 2 designs and a flash animation for the main banner. Unfortunately, he told me that the client still liked the other designers design and he will stick too that even if he will not earn any money and he will send me some cash for my effort. The said cash never came.

He again contacted me regarding a new web design project. This was for a friend of his. It was a sporting site for a store and it will only have one page. I asked him how much will he charge the client for this one page website. He said that because this was his friend he will not charge him anything for it and he promise that he will still send me the money he promised before. It again never came. Headers for WordPress

A couple of weeks ago I received a request from a client to create 50 static headers for Worpdress. He offered to pay $5 USD per header for a total of $250 USD which I gladly accepted. The headers were 935 pixels by 150 pixels in length and width but I also created 800 pixels by 100 pixels version for each one. I based the design of each banner from a list of 50 domain names which the client sent. Obviously, the banners will be used on the domains listed.

I usually ask for a 50% downpayment before working on a job but for this one payment was sent after. Getting paid after doing the work is risky since the client can suddenly disappear or, for some reason, choose not to pay and cancel the job. It has happened to me a lot of times in the past too. Anyway, I fully trust this client that is why I agreed to get paid after. Read the rest of this entry »
